Learn French by reading.
LitBook generates short French reading passages at exactly your level — from A0 to C2 — with questions, hints in your own language and instant feedback. A real ten-minute reading habit, matched to you.
Why reading is the way in
Nearly a third of English vocabulary came through French, so the page is full of words you already half-know: important, restaurant, décision, musique. Reading is also where French is at its friendliest — the famous pronunciation hurdles (silent letters, liaison) simply don't apply when the words sit still on a page.
The research behind this approach: how learning by reading works.

Au café
Bonjour! Je suis au café avec mon ami. Nous buvons un café. Je prends un café au lait. Mon ami prend un chocolat chaud. Il y a une table près de la fenêtre. C'est très agréable. Nous parlons et nous rions. Le café est bon!
1. Où sont les personnes?
Hint: Think of where people drink coffee and sit at tables.
2. Qu'est-ce que la première personne prend?
Hint: The person says 'Je prends un café au lait' — look for the word that matches 'au lait'.
3. Comment est le café?
Hint: At the end, the person uses a positive word to describe the coffee.
4. L'ami prend un café.
Hint: The friend takes something hot, but not the same thing as the first person.
5. Il y a une table près de la fenêtre.
Hint: The passage mentions a table and a window in the same sentence.

Gender and agreement
Every noun is le or la, and adjectives dress to match (un petit café, une petite table). Reading is the gentlest way to absorb which is which — you meet each noun with its article, hundreds of times.
Spelling vs sound
French spelling preserves history the mouth has abandoned. Read first, and attach the sounds later — the reverse order is much harder.

Questions, answered
+Can I learn French just by reading?
Reading at the right level builds vocabulary and grammar faster than almost anything else, and research on comprehensible input backs this up. You'll still want listening and speaking practice for conversation — but reading is the strongest possible foundation.
+Is French hard for English speakers?
It's one of the easier choices: the US Foreign Service groups French with the fastest languages for English speakers, and the shared vocabulary is enormous. The spelling system and gender take patience; neither blocks a reading-first start.
+What should I read as a French beginner?
Texts written for your exact level. Children's classics like Le Petit Nicolas work at A2; before that, generated passages at A1 keep every sentence within reach while letting you pick adult topics.
+What is a CEFR level?
The European scale from A0/A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery) that language courses and exams use. LitBook writes every passage at the level you choose, so you always read at the edge of your ability — not beyond it.
